A spur-of-the-moment trip to the zoo turns into an overnighter

Saturday, Oct. 9 – Lynne had just gotten her new Aerostar minivan and we were somewhat eager to take it for a long drive so we decided to visit the Toledo Zoo to see the hippoquarium and packed overnight bags so we wouldn’t have to drive back the same day. We took I-75 up to Toledo and their zoo was very nice, especially the hippoquarium, aquarium building, reptile building and kid’s discovery center. They had some koalas on exhibit which was a nice surprise.
After the zoo we started looking for a place to stay outside of town, planning on stopping just across the border in Michigan. However there was a convention running in the first set of hotels so we ended up at the Best Western in Woodhaven, most of the way to Detroit.
Sunday, Oct. 10 – After breakfast in Woodhaven we drove up to Detroit to see the city. We saw Tiger Stadium, then drove past the Renaissance Center and took the Windsor Tunnel south into Ontario. We meandered around Windsor briefly, then took the Ambassador Bridge north to the U.S. On our way south on I-75 we stopped at Sterling State Park in Monroe, Michigan and walked along a beach on Lake Erie because Michelle had never seen the lake before. We had an uneventful return home on I-75.
